There are some who fear the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider –a mammoth atomic particle accelerator– saying it will create black holes that will, with a giant sucking sound, consume the Earth and all we hold dear. A NASA scientist I was listening to last night reassured his audience… sort of. When someone asked when was it that the LHC was supposed to begin operations, he replied, "oh, it has been started. And we're not really here."

Ha, ha! Scientific humor! I saw Stephen Hawking talking about it. He said nothing bad would happen. So far he's right.
Yeah, it's interesting what engineers and (particularly) physicists think is funny! So far the LHC has only shot particles one way at a time. The real fun begins when they smash 'em head-on from opposite directions at near light-speed! Joking aside, the sheer scale of the LHC and it's experiment chambers is beyond belief. Love to visit but that ain't gonna happen. Really rather see some observatories. — JG
