Friday morning with visitor

Morning Deer
Morning Deer

It was a pretty nice morning this day. I had a reasonably good night's sleep (too brief, as usual, but restful except for waking briefly suspecting the shadow on the wall had supernatural significance, telling my id it was stupid, then going back to sleep). As I was getting dressed for work, clad in briefs and a dress shirt, I spotted a deer munching on tree ring plants in a neighbor's front yard. So I went downstairs, grabbed my camera, and shot a few photos of our visitor. The deer strolled out of the neighbor's yard and toward ours so I moved to the balcony, still clad in briefs and a dress shirt. Hey, I was covered! Anyway, the deer was becoming wary apparently hearing my camera's stupid beeps and clicks but was checking out some ragged landscape plants when I shot the photo shown here. Shortly after that, our Friday morning visitor disappeared into a small wooded area nearby and I went indoors to put my pants on. The deer around here regularly visit our front yards in search of good grazing but we usually don't see them this long after sunrise. They are emboldened by the pressure of diminishing habitat as wooded areas and open fields are developed, mostly for new housing. I can't help but feel sorry for them: they're just trying to make a living in a world that is increasingly hostile. I wish we would preserve more green areas around here as refuge and habitat for these and other wild creatures. Politicians and developers define such lands as "vacant" or "idle." Just shows you what they don't know about the natural world and it's too bad so few people recognize the value of such areas.

The cats are both doing well. You can tell Tasha's feeling better because she was a total grouch towards Missy last night. She's probably transferring the aggression she has over the outdoor cats she sees through the window on to poor old Miss who she sees moving through the nighttime shadows of the living room. At any rate, she charged and hissed at Missy several times last night and was difficult to calm. This morning they were apparently at peace with each other as they got their respective medicines, foods, and treats.

My niece is to be married tomorrow. Most of the family will be traveling to the Dayton area for the ceremonies but we won't be among them. I'd made an early prior commitment to run an open house at the College Observatory for Alumni Day. Pretty important to not miss. By chance we also got into the conflicting requirement for regular medication of two cats who definitely will do better at home than boarded at the vet's. Long-term stress is just no good for them. Still, I'm sorry to miss this important day in her life and the chance to see my family. So, weakly in our stead, we sent our best wishes and a generous gift to dear Rachel. Even now I usually think of her as a 10-year-old girl rather than the engaged recent college graduate she now is. {Sigh!} Where did those years go?

QotD: Current TV

After all the recent season and series finales, what are you watching on TV these days?

Scrubs: They're showing it every night (practically) on Comedy Central and it's a big boost for me at the end of a stupid day. Also The Universe on The History Channel –still don't understand cable/satellite packaging– which is a pretty good series and feeds my jones for science content on TV. So far none of my favorite series has been canceled but it will be nice when the next small batch of Monk shows starts airing.

My night off

It was a good night to get out and look at the stars. I've not been at the observatory for quite some time and have missed two excellent nights. Last night's sky conditions weren't as good as Saturday and Sunday night's but I wasn't up to going out. It's been a physically and emotionally draining week. So after walking to the drug store to renew one of Missy's prescriptions (for thyroid), I packed my observing kit into the car and took off for the dark(er) skies of Portage County.

It's nearing summer solstice so twilight seems to go on forever. Also, with trees tall around the observatory Jupiter, which rose before sunset, didn't clear the trees until a little after 10:00 PM. Seeing wasn't the best for that big, brilliant planet, but I could make out some of the colored bands of Jupiter's atmosphere. I went fishing for a couple of galaxies but never found them; I still have much to learn about aiming the big telescope! After a while I went back to Jupiter and, unfortunately, sky conditions weren't quite as good as earlier. In the mean time Scorpius had risen above the trees and, using red Antares as a guide, I found the beautiful globular star cluster M4, 5,600 light years distant. In the eyepiece the cluster looked elongated vertically and not so densely packed as most of the globulars I've seen. Next, I attached a digital camera to the century-old telescope and tried to image Jupiter but am not happy with the results. I've tried this on another occasion with the Moon as my subject with similarly sad results. I'll have to work on better coupling of the camera to the telescope. Closed up and left at about 11:30 PM with a sore neck (from looking up) but otherwise feeling refreshed. Would have liked to have stayed longer but had to get up for work in the morning. A last look back at the observatory building silhouetted against a very starry sky brought a smile to my face. A most excellent way to end the day!

Cats show improvement

Missy visited Dr. B. today and got very good news. Her blood glucose level is 227 which is just above the targeted 200. She has gained back some of the weight that has slipped away and is well hydrated. Missy tipped the scales at a dainty 8.5 lbs. today, up from 8.1 only last week. We're very pleased. Insulin dose is to be increased slightly from 5 to 6 units once a day. Meanwhile Tasha is doing well. You'd never known we were in full-blown medical crisis a week ago! Dr. B. is having us reduce the antibiotic and stop dosing at the end of the week. The cortisone we will keep up until next week when we check back with the doctor and talk about whether the dosage can be reduced. Nothing is assured, however, and the root of Tasha's episode is still not certain. She's basically being treated for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and has, so far, responded splendidly. All-in-all we're seeing improvements in both cats and hope they enjoy good health for a good long time.

Here's an excellent article on IBD at the Cornell Feline Health Center Web site: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/ibd.html

A good weekend

Missy
Missy

Yes, it was a good weekend: Tasha seems to be nearly back to normal good health, the days were bright and mild, and we went for a 36-mile bicycle ride in the rolling countryside southwest of here. I did not go stargazing Saturday night and am sorry I didn't. I did go out on the balcony and on the stoop with binoculars and got a taste of what I was missing: The Beehive Cluster near Venus to the west, and Jupiter to the south. Jupiter looked to  be spectacular Saturday night even though low in the sky. Ofter, however, after a day at work it's hard to get moving again when evening comes. {Sigh!} Oh well, I'm happy with the weekend anyway.

I shot a couple of new photos of Missy Saturday evening (the sun was still shining through the window of the stairwell). Missy was in her favorite spot… the top of the stairs where she can enjoy the sun, a view outside, and an all-encompassing view of our living room. Missy lost her right eye to a slow-growing melanoma and, at about 18 years of age,  still seems to enjoy her life despite some afflictions of old age. We're glad to still have her with us!

Today is a good day

The weather is excellent. The cats are feeling well. After this week of heat, storms, and sick kitties today is, indeed, a very good day. If I have enough energy left at the end of the day today –this was my Saturday to work– I may go out stargazing; the skies don't get much clearer around here than they are right now and expected to be tonight. We don't get many nights like this in an entire year and, with Jupiter well placed for viewing, I'd like to get out and take a look at it and some deep sky objects. Nice comfortable temperatures and humidities, too.

Cat updates:  Missy's acting better than she has in quite some time, apparently responding well to insulin therapy at a slightly higher dosage: 5 units per day. Her coat and skin condition continue to improve as well. It looks like we got her to the vet just in time; diabetes can be very sneaky. Today Tasha is enjoying the fresh air and sights through the patio door screen, has kept down meals and treats so far, and has reportedly been awake all morning. We still don't know what the matter was (or is) with Tash but I'm happy for any improvements. We talk to the vet again on Monday and it will be interesting to hear what he says. In the mean time, we hope for an uneventful and beautiful weekend.

Tasha eating again

The night ends with a hopeful development. Tasha started eating small amounts of dry cat food late this afternoon and –so far, so good– has kept it down! At this point I'll take any positive development as good news. I've also seen her at the water bowl. So at bed time (it's 11:15 PM EDT despite what the time stamp says) I can go to sleep with happier thoughts on my mind. Hoping tomorrow brings a cat gaining strength and getting healthier!

Tasha back from the hospital

Tasha avoiding the lens
Tasha avoiding the lens

Tasha spent Wednesday night and most of the day Thursday at our vet's animal hospital. They wanted to continue treatment with medication, etc., and hydration, do more blood tests, another x-ray, and observe her. After this round of treatment our vet still doesn't know for sure what's going on though he thinks it may be either inflammatory bowel disease or (worst case) an intestinal cancer (lymphoma). We have a cat who looks and acts well except for this nasty symptom of throwing up just about anything she eats. Now she's been through about 48 hours of stress and it shows. We fear the high stress could activate her FIV and cause even worse things to happen. It's so frustrating! We're doing everything we can for this kitty and still we don't even know for sure what is going on! Tasha came home last night (Thursday) and spent a lot of time exploring the entire house. She still seems a little ill-at-ease today but is becoming more relaxed. I'm to dose her twice daily with oral cortisone and antibiotic medications. My plan right now is to offer her very small bits of food, which she seems to tolerate, during the day in hopes that we can get her system running normally again. I'm to call the vet at noon and speak with him about Tasha's condition and what's next.

Update: We'll continue medication and attempts to feed Tasha over the weekend. Next step in trying to solve this mystery, if symptoms continue, is to get an image using barium orally to see if it discloses a kink or invisible blockage of some sort that is causing this trouble. We'll see how things look Monday.

Scrubs: It’s not overkill

Ah, Scrubs. I love that show and it has been great to have so many opportunities to see repeats via Comedy Central, etc. I hope they don't run it into the ground! The writing and performances can give you extreme silliness and laughter at one point and move you to tears 15 seconds later. Not bad for a little half-hour TV series! The show's use of music is also impressive and fun. Like this mini-music video from one show seen again recently. The main characters are frustrated and angry with each other for a variety of reasons. Zach Braff's "J.D." is hiding from an especially enraged "Dr. Cox." And they set it to music by Colin Hay. To the impressive Zach, whose career is so far brilliant, I'll send out an, "I love you man, in a non-gay way!"

Tasha’s back at vet

Posted by Photonstopper on June 6, 2007

Because her problem continued this morning, our local veterinary office is keeping Tasha for the afternoon for continued injected medication, hydration, and further examination. Even the vet, Dr. M., remarked that Tash looked like a fine healthy cat. The fact that she vomits about once an hour hasn't –so far– changed her appearance. This vet wasn't sure she agreed with the emergency practitioner … the problem may not be an inflamed bowel. She and I agree that the esophagus is worth a look for the trigger of all this trouble. So we'll see what they find. The office is supposed to call at 5:00 to discuss findings and where our poor cat will spend the night.

Update: The vet called at 4:30 reporting that, as before, nothing could be found that certainly is causing Tasha's difficulties. A new x-ray indicated a possibly enlarged spleen and thickened intestine but the film was sent out for reading by a radiologist. No indication of blockage in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Tasha will spend the night at the local vet's for continued medication and observation to be reevaluated in the morning.
