Clouds, bikes, and firewalls

Last night (Saturday) was a scheduled open house at the observatory. The weather (cloud cover) was extremely doubtful but there was enough clear sky that I felt I had to make the drive out and open the dome. Good thing I did! All told about 12 visitors stopped by over the evening with the last leaving after 11 PM — they were the same two ladies who showed up as my first visitors at about 9:30! We had surprisingly good views of Jupiter considering sky conditions but a long wait for the Moon to climb out from behind the neighbor's trees. When Luna finally rose high enough we had to wait for breaks in the clouds — most people seemed to think the wait was worth it. Views at around 100X weren't very special so I switched to a low-power, fist-sized antique eyepiece and the entire view was changed. We could see the entire nearly-full Moon in the field of view with good detail overall and excellent seeing of the terminator. Even thin clouds scudding across the lunar disk seemed to add, rather than detract. So not too bad a night. My Moon photo apparently was published in Ravenna's Record-Courier… I've gotta try and get a copy!

Today we took a very nice, somewhat challenging, great circle route between Valley City and Medina. Some hills, though not bad. Mostly good roads, nice scenery, and enough wind to help with cooling (it was hot and muggy) made for an overall pleasant experience. Total distance = 30 miles. Not like the long rides of the old days but it's the ride, not the distance, that matters most to us. Some soreness in the neck and shoulders, a bit of tinnitus, but not as bad as last week. Surprising sight along the way (sorry: no photo)… we were riding along and saw a white bicycle standing up against a saw horse in someone's front yard. The bike was for sale and, straining to see the make, I expected it would be an old Schwinn, Sears, or possibly a classic steel bike. Nope. It was a Kestrel! We could hardly believe it… a high-end bike like that cable-locked to a sawhorse on a country front yard!

My Trek 2200
My Trek 2200

I haven't mentioned it in this blog but my sweetie bought me (with family money) a very nice present. A beautiful new Trek 2200 (2006 model) now carries me on our little jaunts. The purchase actually surprised both of us. We were visiting a bike shop and I was idly examining bikes when the owner, a person we know, said "what size bike do you ride?" I told him and he said, "here, you've got to see this!" It was a beautiful, "candy red" Trek 2200 bike made from lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber with the Bontrager name all over the wheels, fork, and even the tires. A quick test ride (inside the shop!) showed it was a very good fit and we actually went home with it in the back of our car! Surprised the heck out of both of us as we aren't used to making impulse buys of that size. Still, it was being offered at a genuine 50 percent off the original price. I put my SpeedPlay pedals on the thing, adjusted the seat height and tilt a little and it is as close to perfection for me as can be! I can even pedal whilst in the drops and I've always had problems with that. I really love riding the thing but never thought I'd be blessed with such a machine — me, an old steel frame roadie. Now I've got to figure out when I'll ride the Specialized Allez we picked up a few years ago, charmed by the beauty of its simple lug work. It may not be so hard a decision as I expect, however, since the Trek is, again, so close to perfection.

Tomorrow I get to work on a firewall issue. A little firewall device, purchased to protect the compromised server against future assault, is doing a great job — it shuts off all incoming traffic. That's pretty effective protection but not so good when you want people to be able to use the server. Just learned tonight, after Googling the issue description, that the NetGear FVS114 firewall router is known for this "lock up" behavior. There's no solution, either. Drat! Well, at least now I know. This was a surprise since I've had really good past experience with the company's small routers. I'll probably have to buy a much more expensive device just to provide the reliability the NetGear is lacking. It's always something.

I need a rest

After a good many hours of prep, extra-careful system backups, installation of a new firewall, and much delay due to short-staffing at our vendor's support center, we've finally exorcised the demon miscreant from our server. This little adventure, on someone's part, cost us many hours of unnecessary work and inconvenience to our users. The system is stronger after our efforts –system crackers love to say that is the good they do– but at what price? These guys were definitely "Black Hats" up to no good, sharing out files from our system and scanning others for openings. Good riddance. At any rate, restoration is within our grasp and I'm hoping I can finally head out of here before long and have a nice quiet dinner.

The weather continues dreary but we need the rain so much I don't care! In fact, the clouds are giving us a rather mild week with highs only in the 70s (F) which is just the way I like it! The clouds may hang on through Saturday night, though, and so threaten our observatory open house. What will be will be. I need a rest, anyway.

Intruder alert!

Well crap! We just learned, thanks to reports from the IT departments at a couple of universities, that one of our Web servers has been compromised. It's a Solaris 10 box and on it was found, in hidden directories, a big stash of MP3 music and the like. Also an unauthorized account. Our ISP generated some utilization graphs that showed our T1 transmissions were nearing 90 percent of capacity every late night — probably some low-life using us to share files and trying to reach out and touch some other poor sucker. So soon, very soon, I'll most likely have to take down the server, wipe the hard drive, and rebuild from bare metal. Or otherwise replace the server. To those miscreants who have perverted the formerly noble title of "hacker" and  say they do these things because they can, I ask this: If we were standing across from each other, would it be okay for me to punch you in the face because I can? No? Hmmm. I guess I don't get your rationalization, then. Intruder alert indeed!

Good Night Moon!

Another Moon Shot
Another Moon Shot

Yeah, here's another photo from last night's shoot at the observatory. These were the only two that were good but they really made me happy because, up til then, I'd been unable to get any kind of photo through the big telescope. Now, well, it'll be fun to see what we can do. There's a color fringe around the lunar disc –chromic abberration– that's a common problem with refractors but it ain't bad considering the optics of this 9-inch achromatic doublet are 107 or so years old! I sent a copy of this photo to a local newspaper to see if they'll use it and give us a bit of added publicity. It's surprising to me just how excited people get when they look at the lunar surface through a good telescope. Gratifying too, as if I had anything to do with it! I guess it's just pleasing letting folks see the universe in a way they usually cannot. Our Moon is to be the centerpiece of July 28th's open house at the observatory.

Today we went on a rather demanding albeit short bicycle ride from Medina to Spencer Lake and back. Hilly on the way out, and gradual climb against the wind on the way back, a 28-mile round-trip. A nice day in the sun and fresh air but I'm tired from the late night and today's exertion and, as usual after a ride, I'm sore in the shoulders and have some tinnitus.

Good Night Moon!

Across the centuries

The Moon: July 21, 2007
The Moon: July 21, 2007

I just had to take a look at my efforts even though it's after 1:00 AM Sunday, July 22. I went to the observatory and was able to use the 2-inch adapter to mount my Canon Digital Rebel XT camera to the century-old Warner and Swasey telescope with its 9-inch Brashear objective. All of the photos are a bit soft but not surprising… because of trees surrounding the site, the photos were all made in bright twilight. And the atmosphere was unsteady. Still, this first success pleases me and I can hardly wait to try again under better conditions! Didn't try Jupiter because it just didn't look good enough — details barely distinguishable by eye. So it's off to bed — 1:45 AM now — tired but happy: the 19th century telescope and the 21st century camera work well together across the centuries.

Into the weekend….

Black-Eyed Susan
Black-Eyed Susan

It was a busy day Friday with plenty of work to do. I finished rebuilding a PC for a fellow who almost certainly got spyware on his system –or worse– and who should have known better. So he has a fresh OS install along with all of the latest apps and updates. We'll see how long it takes him to make the same mistakes that messed up his system before!

Tasha's cortisone is now down to dosing every third day. Still acting healthy and keeping her meals down. I'm happy.

Today (Saturday) was running around on errands and shopping in the beautiful weather. Two new bookcases ordered and due in four weeks. Once home I checked out the news on how a tiny local bookstore drew upwards of 12,000 people to their town square for their special Harry Potter activities. That's 12,000 men, women, and children! The Learned Owl Bookstore, on the square in Hudson, Ohio, embraced H.P. early-on with genuine enthusiasm that went far beyond simple sales promotion. I love that little shop.

I shot some photos of flowers in our patio area. Lily pedals lit from behind were hauntingly beautiful but I didn't think focus was as sharp as it ought to be. One of those images may yet show up here; the colors were just so vivid. The black-eyed Susans, however, presented an excellent opportunity in the late-day sun. The Fuji FinePix S7000 isn't the best all-in-one camera for action but it has a great "super-macro" and has given me excellent results.

I'm planning to go to the observatory tonight and get some practice aiming using celestial coordinates. I also want to see if a new adapter will finally allow me to attach a modern camera to the old telescope. If it works, a photo will surely show up here and, possibly, in local newspapers.

Finally some rain!

It was a quiet but nice weekend with a little running around to stores, on chores, etc. As usual, not enough sleep even when time allowed sleeping in.

The week began with my new office-mate coming in to take over my Webmaster responsibilities. That occupied a good portion of the morning yesterday and today. Fortunately he has some training and learns quickly. Unfortunately he's one of those folk who run ahead when being shown a software process so I regularly have to ask him to stop, look, then click. Not too difficult giving up those responsibilities as I've plenty to do. But not so easy, either.

After a long time without significant rain we're now getting a steady shower here in Northeastern Ohio. It's been raining about about two hours –gently and steadily– and we need every inch. Finally some rain!

Can’t stand the heat

Today is a good day to have an indoor job. You can't always say that but the official temperature in Cleveland, Ohio is 97 degrees !!  That's hot most places plus we've got the weird combination of high humidity and near drought conditions. Helping out a little is the fact that it's overcast. On balance the cloud cover is good when it's already this hot, but there's a very interesting sunspot group on the face of the Sun right now and I can't even take a look. Oh well.

On Dr. B.'s standing orders, I've reduced Tasha's daily cortisone dose from a half-tablet daily to a half-tablet every other day. So far, so good. She seems to have more energy so is certainly acting like she feels better. She'd like to have the windows open but, well, see the paragraph above… it's the humans' house and we can't stand the heat. (Or at least don't want to have to put up with it!)

Ratatouille and canoeing

Omelette anyone?
Omelette anyone?

Today (Friday) we went to see the latest Pixar film, Ratatouille. It was a very good story skillfully told and animated in Pixar's increasingly amazing style. The level of detail in some scenes is simply incredible and, though the animated characters look, well, like 3D cartoons, they often move through photo-realistic virtual sets. The characters are appealing and have personality, especially true of the star rat, Remy. The overall experience was refreshingly enjoyable and, though small children may not "get" the sophisticated story, Ratatouille is suitable for all ages and enjoyable by most.

Following the film and a quick lunch at Taco Bell, we took off for Hinckley Lake and the boat livery where we rented a canoe and paddled around for about an hour. It was a beautiful day on the lake with deep blue water below, light blue sky above, and forest green trees all around the water. Children in a kayak class provided some entertainment whilst great blue heron reminded us that this is also a natural area.

A nice enough day but it's back to work with me tomorrow! And I happen to know there is work waiting for my return in the form of software problems and user issues. At least I've this Sunday off and that will make transitioning from vacation week to work week a little less of a shock.

Happy birthday to me!

July 4 is my birthday. Instead of having a party or some such thing, I decided to pay my mother a visit. It had been a long, long time since I'd seen her and we had a splendid time. She's 80 years old but bright, active, and fully independent — enviable conditions for that age. Two of her three kids (the boys) live some distance away so she sees us rarely. Our sister lives much closer. We chatted for the longest time and shared lunch and dinner before I headed back home –it's a 2 1/2-hour drive– for the night. I have got to visit more often! Back at home we watched the big Cleveland fireworks display on TV. It was very impressive on TV but it's really not at all the same experience as seeing it with your own eyes. Now I want to go to a fireworks show!

My lovely Indian neighbor, Leela, learned that it was my birthday and left a greeting card taped to our door. In part it read, "I am glad you are my neighbors — just like finding a small stream of water in a dry neighborhood." Between visiting Mom and that thought from Leela, it was a happy birthday.

I'd worried about Tasha because she threw up three times in one day but she seems fine. No more puking except for a tiny fur ball and that doesn't count since fur balls aren't what worry me. They're merely gross! And Missy, though yowling excessively the morning after her vet visit, has returned to her normal habits. All is well, then, at home.

I've been dissatisfied with my personal M.D. for a while and July 3rd's appointment pretty much sealed the deal… I'm moving on! Not only could his staff tech not draw blood for testing but for no stated reason, the doc ordered a thallium stress test. As I understand it, a thallium stress test is only indicated where cardiac disease is suspected and he gave me no reason to believe my heart has any problems. There has to be a very good reason for me to allow myself to be injected with a radioactive substance and Dr. D. didn't give me any reason at all. So I see a new practice August 3 and hope for better treatment.
