Ancient Barn under Changeable Skies

February started off cloudy and gray, as many days have been of late. During an errand to Medina, Ohio some blue sky and sunshine appeared through gaps in the rolling clouds; we headed to the Medina Woods Park and its Chippewa Inlet Trailhead. Strolling along the trail encircling a major wetland restoration area. Weather has been cold enough to maintain a thin layer of ice on areas of open water. Geese, ducks, and a pair of Trumpeter Swans stood on the ice, eyeing us warily.

Patches of sunlight shifted across the scenery, now and then illuminating an ancient barn on the property and bringing out colors in pond ice.

As we headed back to the parking lot, gaps in the cloud cover closed and overcast saw us off. Changeable skies, indeed.

Brilliant Sunset in the Cold Skies of January

This one happened fast! Minutes earlier a layer of clouds promised to add interest to the scene but as the sun sank the clouds disappeared. The sky close to the horizon turned orange and, to my eye, showed a bit of green as well! I quickly got set up in the 20-degree evening air and missed the full disk of the sun. I did get this piece of old Sol but the next exposure showed only a dot. Then no sun, only a beautiful glow. Even the glow faded fast!

Beautiful without snow

Christmas Morning 2015: Ottokee, Ohio

Visiting Northwestern Ohio on Christmas Day, we found the scenery to be without snow. This year’s El Niño weather influences gave us higher than normal temperatures, so any precipitation was liquid rather than crystalline. Although a snowless December 25 is not unusual for the northwestern farmlands, a coating of snow hides the brown fields and decorates bare-branched trees; it was missed. Still, there was beauty to be seen where sun, air, and cloud conspired to make the day beautiful without snow.

A lighthouse without a light?

Vermilion Lighthouse Decorated for Holidays

It sounds crazy, a lighthouse without a light, but it’s true. The lovely little landmark on the shores of Lake Erie in Vermilion, Ohio is a 34-foot “private navigational aid” with a lineage that reaches back to the 1800s.

The original wooden tower was replaced in about 1877 with a steel structure and stood as a warning to sailors until 1929. The tower was seen to be in danger of falling over and so was promptly removed. A valued piece of scenery, a reminder of Vermilion’s history was gone.

Members of the community put together enough funds that in 1991, construction of a new lighthouse was commissioned for the city. The light, with a Fresnel lens installed, was dedicated on June 6, 1992. For many years a steady red beacon shined out over the lake until fate stepped in again. The lens, owned by the Inland Seas Maritime Museum that shares the shoreline property with the little lighthouse, was removed when the museum closed up shop recently and moved to Toledo.

The treasured lighthouse is now dark.

Citizens have formed a Lighthouse Preservation Committee, dedicated to preservation and upkeep of the Vermilion Lighthouse and central to their mission: replacement of the Fresnel lens and return of light to the lighthouse.

Here’s hoping the coming year brings quick success as the Committee seeks to raise $40,500 for a new lens!

Donations can be mailed, payable to:

Note: Online donation is possible but I did not see a way to earmark donations for the lighthouse project.

Tasha in Her Prime

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to feline family member Tasha today. I came down to the main floor this morning and discovered her standing, seemingly lost. She had been sick numerous times. Tasha was also having intestinal distress; so we took her to the veterinary clinic to try and understand her condition. Tasha, at about age 16, had been in failing health for some time and was thought likely to have lymphoma. Dr. R., new to us at the clinic, was kind and gentle in her examination and in her discussions with us but reported Tasha likely had only a couple of months to live. We agonized over the choices: treat and “make comfortable” or euthanasia. The awful choice was made to spare our cat the continued and increasing suffering. So, at a little before 3:00 this afternoon, Tasha’s life ended.

The beginning of our time with Tasha came when we adopted her at a big box pet store from a local cat rescue group; that was on July 1, 2000. We took our new kitty to our vet for tests and found, to our horror, that she tested FIV-positive. We nearly returned her to the agency. We did crash research, however, including a call to the Cornell Feline Health Center, on the risks to our resident cats of sharing life with an FIV+ animal; we determined the risk was low. We also learned Tasha’s rescue story: found in a box, discarded with trash, her murdered kittens with her. There are everyday monsters out there living among us, posing as decent human beings.

With us Tasha found love and care and, we hope, a happy life. We nursed her through several health issues including hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure.

The last couple of years saw Tasha lose sight in one eye, lose most of her hearing, and develop a limp in one leg. What we’ll remember, however, is an affectionate cat that would often snuggle with us in bed, sometimes sharing my pillow, and who waited at the door for me to come home from work on late nights.

We will miss you, dear one.

Mother Guilford’s Brother John & Wife

Spending a cold and cloudy Saturday trying to declutter, I came across a couple of antique photographs I’d nearly forgotten about. Lost in stacks of documents, the two pictures represent points of history, my family’s history (apparently), in Ohio and in Arkansas! On the back of the mounted “Mother Guilford” photo is the handwritten inscription: “this is Mother Guilford’s bro. John + wife at their home in War Eagle. Ark. Benton Co.” I didn’t know I had relatives in Arkansas but it looks like quite a family in this picture, filling the front porch!

The second image, labeled “Big Locust Farm” was taken April 15, 1903, according to a handwritten note. The printed label reads, “Big Locust Farm, Capt. J.J. Waffle, R.F.D., No. 3  / Delta, O. /  Phone — Via Wauseon 5 rings on Winameg line.” I don’t know if Capt. Waffle was any relation to me nor do I know if he was the subject of the photo (with two other folks) or the photographer! Capt. Waffle would be a good name for a kids’ sweetened breakfast food.

So far these are the most valuable artifacts I’ve uncovered in my efforts this day. Mostly, I uncovered dust.

Photo: Finalist Certificate for James Guilford

Nifty Certificate

My photo was selected as a Finalist in the Annual Spring Photography Contest staged by Photographer’s Forum Magazine. In the great scheme of things, it’s really not that big a deal: out of about 10,000 entries (if I remember correctly) my photograph was chosen as one of 1,500 finalists. My entry didn’t get beyond that level in the judging process but will get published in the magazine’s Best of Photography 2015 book and today I received a nifty certificate proclaiming my achievement. If they’re publishing 1,000 pictures in their book, I expect mine will be pretty small, so it’s unlikely I’ll purchase a copy but they are making tear sheets available and I’ll be ordering a couple copies. I rarely enter contests so to have gotten this far, well, I’m pretty pleased. Here’s my entry (below) “Under the Shelf”, which looks far better on a big screen!

Last Leaf, Last Light

The evening light falls through bare branches to the forest floor, illuminating the few remaining leaves that are not on the ground. Soon darkness will fall. Soon the leaves will fall. So ends the day.
