A terrible, rocky night.

It was a terrible, rocky night. Tasha, our lone Russian blue kitty, has some sort of skin disease. Doctor B. thinks its mites but there's no direct evidence of that or what specific kind of mite. How did this trouble start? We're not even sure of that except that in early fall, Tasha escaped from the house and tore after a neighbor's cat — the entire incident took not even 30 seconds but possibly just long enough to pick something up from that other cat or the grass and ground of the front yard!

We thought the latest treatment (a broad-spectrum anti-microbial and application of the anti-parasitic Revolution) would do the trick. Indeed, she did get some relief. Last night or, more accurately, this morning proved us wrong about a cure, however. Around 1:00 or 1:30 AM Tasha leaped on to the bed and began furiously licking and scratching herself. She kept that up for probably an hour: scratching, trotting around the bed, licking, trotting some more. I lay awake agonizing over the cat's torment and finally decided to get out of bed, go downstairs, to try to comfort the cat and spare She Who Must Be Obeyed sleep disruption. I applied some antiseptic to Tasha's raw patches which by then were bare of fur. After perhaps another half hour to an hour the poor cat seemed to settle down into a favorite spot and was quiet. I went to bed but awoke severely sleep-deprived at the appointed workday hour.

Calling the vet's office, I discussed with Dr. G. (Dr. B. is away for the week) what we might do. She suggested shampooing with Pyoben, a product commonly used to relieve such maladies in horses, dogs, and cats. So tonight Tasha got one of the few baths she has had in her life to be followed, over the next week(s) by many more. Cats, even the short-haired variety, look really pathetic when they're soaking wet. Tasha didn't like the treatment even one bit but I've high hopes the cleaning will bring at least some relief and maybe lead to a cure. At least I can hope.

Once She and I have our teamwork figured out (She usually shampoos, I usually rinse and dry) I'll try and shoot a photo or two of poor Tasha when she's at her wettest. It won't embarrass Tasha… she doesn't have a computer.

UPDATE: Once dry, Tasha seemed very much more comfortable. Her fur is even softer and smoother than before the bath. We had uninterrupted sleep and I think "we" includes the cat. We left the house for work this morning and Tasha remained quiet, not scratching, and full of purrs. — 3/2/2010

Ice house

Ice House
Ice House

My "vacation" week ended today. I'd taken time off to complete my annual publishing project. It didn't get done. A mixed bag this week with good days and bad:

  • Got called to work on an emergency when a primary server began malfunctioning.
  • Didn't need to commute in bad weather but…
  • Shoveled lots of snow.
  • Installed updated publishing software (Adobe InDesign) which works great.
  • Still struggling with publication layout due to lack of inspiration.
  • Had nice days out with She Who Must Be Obeyed yesterday and today including a stop in Olmsted Falls and their shopping area full of restored/rehabbed historic buildings.
  • Wrote my first DVD video review for posting on Amazon.com: National Geographic's Five Years on Mars.
  • Tasha's skin disorder –severe itchiness about the head and neck– we thought resolved has relapsed. Depressing.

So back to the paying job tomorrow. The ice house photo came out well also further proving the new Canon "L" lens is of excellent quality.

Auguries of Innocence*
by William Blake

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

We do it to stop time.

Ice Cave
Ice Cave

I couldn't help it. I simply had to try and improve on the icicle photos I'd made a few minutes earlier. So I hauled out my best camera and shot a few more photos of icicles dripping lit by the day's unexpected brilliance against a shockingly blue sky. I checked my first "second" batch and found the lens had been spattered by drops of water striking the window frame. I blotted the offending drops off the expensive glass and tried again. I guess this was more like a third try. As I write, I hear occasional crashes as the stalactites lose their grip and fall to shatter against the ground. We photograph to preserve the ephemeral; we do it to stop time.

Surprise!

Icicle Sun
Icicle Sun

It wasn't in the forecast. Today was supposed to be partly-sunny at best. Instead we awoke to clear skies that, as the day progressed, stayed with us becoming deep blue. The temperature climbed to nearly 40 degrees (F) making the icicles sweat, shrink, and sometimes lose their grip entirely. Now the forecast has shifted… they're saying today will be partly-cloudy, tomorrow mostly-cloudy with a chance of snow. I've got a scheduled open night at the observatory tomorrow night. What will the weather be like? Maybe like today, or maybe some other sort of surprise!

Coming back around to my true heading

Einstein Laughing
Einstein Laughing

I haven't done "people" photos –portraits, dance, illustration– in a very long time. Recently I was running a Google Image search for pictures of Albert Einstein. I'd seen a photograph of the great theoretical physicist in the middle of a big laugh. While Einstein was known for the twinkle in his eye and had been photographed poking out his tongue, gently smiling, and riding a bicycle, I'd never seen him in a full-out laugh. Well, I found that image unfortunately without attribution; I don't know the photographer, publisher, or copyright status (please forgive me if you own this image). As I was searching, however, I came across a more formal portrait of Einstein… this one by Yousuf Karsh (1908 – 2002). That led me to order a book about his life and work, Karsh: A Biography In Images. My admiration for the work of the late Arnold Newman (1918 – 2006) resurfaced. All of this served to stir my longing to continue rekindling my practice of photography and get back into the action. Maybe seek out a photo assignment. We'll see. I'm already pulled in too many directions. Perhaps I'm coming back around to my true heading.

Snow and ice in ever-growing heaps

Columnar Icicle
Columnar Icicle

Our house seems to grow a decent crop of icicles just about every winter. This season, however, seems to be an extraordinarily good one for the propagation of giant icy spears. We've seen one, at a neighboring house, that reached from the second floor roofline to the ground. At our own place an icicle has formed a complete column between the icebound eves trough and the garage roof below; at least it is now self-supporting and hopefully placing no more strain on the gutter system! We've been lucky in that large, potentially deadly ice hasn't formed above our entryway as it did at a neighbor's; they actually had a crew come in and knock down the dangerous stalactites! Snow? I guess we've been fairly lucky there, too. While it has snowed just about every day for ever so long, it seems to drop only a few inches of fluff daily. We are able to keep our walk clear with a snow plow-shaped shovel using it to push the snow away instead of having to lift and pile it in ever-growing heaps.

Back to the gray grind

Ice at Office Window
Ice at Office Window

The day started out sunny and frosty. I thought the thermometer on our patio read something like 14 degrees as I left the house. At one point during my travel, however, I glanced at the dashboard… the car's thermometer was reading 6 degrees (F). I'm not sure what that was about. It didn't seem that cold to me! The natural beauty (and light traffic due to the Presidents Day holiday) made for an enjoyable drive to work. Put in a nice, solid day of effort including a configuration tweak on our new MozyPro backup software — it needed to have a dedicated Temp directory set up on a drive with more free space along with a small Windows registry edit. Rovin, the helpful young man on the phone from India, had the right solution on the first try. Unseen by me during the day, clouds were thickening and by the time it was time to go home, it was lightly snowing. I took a look out the office window from which I spied the insanely beautiful snow drift sculpture not many days ago. There, wet from unseen thaw above, a small forest of icicles was forming on an evergreen tree. I shot a few photos before leaving for a snowy drive home. Back to the gray grind of work and winter weather.

It’s time to go home

Many an IT worker is familiar with the sight: a lone car, his own, in the parking lot. The network is quiet when all have left and offices are empty; that's when important work can be done, seen and appreciated by no one. The "computer guy" is last to leave. If he's lucky, the parking lot lights are on. Scrape the ice off the windshield; it's time to go home.
