Seeking Comet Lulin

It is an unexpected clear night, and it is cold: 17 degrees (F). Between the temperature, recent snows, and being tired it did not make a lot of sense to either set up a telescope (in my situation*) or drive to the observatory to look for the green comet Lulin (C/2007 N3). I did want to see it, however, and it should be easy to spot since bright Saturn and Lulin would be very near each other in the sky.

Even with a relatively clear sky the light pollution of our suburban area is bad. Only the brightest stars and planets were visible this night: Venus was brilliant in the twilight and for a couple of hours after sunset, as it has been all winter. Now Saturn rises at a decent hour and tonight it was well above the southeastern horizon in the great constellation Leo and, due to its golden color, was easily found. Leo was difficult to make out so I'm glad I didn't depend upon it!

Standing in my winter coat and pajama bottoms –yes, it's 17 degrees– I aimed my 10 x 50 binoculars at Saturn. The brilliant dot floated in the visual field. I couldn't make out the planetary disk but nearby, and to Saturn's south, was a faint, diffuse, oblong cloud — Comet Lulin. Invisible here to the unaided eye, it's being estimated at between magnitude 5 and 6. No nucleus was visible and no color noticeable. That should not be surprising given less than ideal base sky conditions, light pollution, and the small-aperture binoculars. I took one last look at the semi-starry sky and gingerly walked the icy path back to the house.

Still, I saw the comet on the night when it is passing closest to Earth. And I got out under a "clear" sky with an optical instrument for the first time in months! It has been a long, cold, snowy, and cloudy winter and I'm hoping conditions improve soon. Our first public night for the year is set for March 7 when we'll be looking at Saturn — the rings will be edge-on this year. And maybe I'll get a better look at that little green fuzz-ball Lulin. You never know!

* I've only purchased equatorial, tripod-mounted refractors til now. For occasions like this, however, a nice Dobsonian-mounted reflector would be great as a grab-and-go telescope. Hmmm…. is there room left in my basement?

Miles to go, and promises to keep

Frosty Morning
Frosty Morning

It was one of those mornings I would really have rather spent tramping around in the woods and fields with my camera, enjoying the last of the snow and a bright dawn. There was a beautiful deposit of hoar frost on nearly everything — even our fence. As I trudged towards my car, I stopped to photograph the top of a fence post. Spikes of ice crystals had formed along every ridge in the wood and around a staple that rode across the grain. As I drove cross-country I sighed at the beauty of a field where dry grass and thistle stems and pods still stood, having survived the winter's crush. They were outlined in frost now lit from behind by the rising sun. Soon the scene would be changed and the magic gone as that same sun would melt the frosty coat away. I, however, had to go to work. No stopping for a stroll through the dream landscape made by a winter's night. Miles to go, and promises to keep.

It’s “Thawsday”

Icicles on "Thawsday"
Icicles on "Thawsday"

It was another beautiful day today. This time, however, for the first time in weeks the temperature went above freezing — the thaw has begun.

Everywhere I looked the snow has begun to compact and has a mottled or dimpled surface. Icicles are dripping and some are beginning to fall from their perches high above the ground.

I spent most of the day in my office: duty called. So I sadly missed out on hiking in the snowy woods, along icy steams, and letting the sunlight fall on my face. There's some hope I'll get to do some of that this weekend. I'd really hate to miss out on a beautiful, comfortable winter's day.

Standing on the landing with the window open, taking photos of dripping icicles against a blue sky, I turned to discover I was being watched. Tasha was sitting quietly at the top of the stairs in perfect light. She posed and I made a new portrait of her — the best I've ever got of that cat.

Cold but beautiful

It was a cold but beautiful day. As I left the house a little after dawn, the temperature was -1.7 degrees (F). The sky was an amazing shade of blue with the horizon showing pink all around. The fresh, fluffy snow sparkled. It was quiet. I packed my commuter items in the car but before leaving, brought out the camera I carry daily: my trusty Fuji FinePix S7000. In the cold, still air I did my best to capture some of the unusual color and dawning beauty of the day. The trees here all had tufts of snowy fluff on their branches.

The slightest movement or breath of wind caused the snow to collapse into a cloud and drift to the ground — I knew the scene would not last for long.

She Who Must Be Obeyed had suggested I shoot a couple more images of the piles of snow and ice that surround our house. One photo includes my car and shows it right next to a plow-piled mountain of snow easily larger than the Honda.

Up in the bare branches of the tree in our front yard may be seen dark dots –one of them red– which are birds assembling for their turn at the feeder. It is usual for us to see sparrows, blue jays, cardinals (the red dot), black-capped chickadees, gold finches, house finches, hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers… they were all represented today.

The sky stayed mostly clear all day and it was refreshing to see the sun and not worry about how much more snow we would face in our travels.

This evening I stood on the indoor landing between our first and second floors admiring a beautiful sunset through the window. A jet trail illuminated against the dark sky inspired me to grab the camera again. I captured the trail and the sunset sky. Then I turned the camera to the southwest, still through the window. Any time, in recent weeks, when we have been blessed by clear evening skies, the planet Venus has shown like a brilliant diamond high above the horizon. There it was tonight.

It's only a few pixels in the digital image but there that diamond is, set against a deep blue velvet sky, floating over a beautiful pink sunset. The day ended as it had begun. It was cold but beautiful.

Sheesh!

Sheesh, sez I
Sheesh, sez I

We went to bed last night with the barest trace of snow on the sidewalks, the Moon hazily visible through thin clouds overhead. We awoke at 6:00 this morning with about eight inches of fluffy snow piled everywhere… including on the formerly-clean seed trays of the bird feeders. Thank goodness the snow was relatively light and fluffy due to the 15-degree (F) temps. But there was so much of it! Lots of fluff can still be a lot of work, fuss, and bother. In the picure here a tiny finch, one of our first visitors of the day, is nearly lost in the accumulated snow collar on the thistle seed feeder. The feeder in the background? I cleared off the tray when I was out shoveling. We thought this was going to be an easy weather week… Sheesh!

Peering down on the sands of Mars

Victoria Crater, Mars
Victoria Crater, Mars

There are many amazing images being transmitted by our robot emissaries at Mars and this is one of my favorites. Not only does it depict the half-mile Victoria Crater on that neighboring world but it shows us how weather reshapes the surface there. Winds have shifted the red sands to form dunes in the floor of the crater (at center) and drifts of sand and planes along the lines of wind direction (from right to left). At an even more detailed level this amazing photo also lets us look down on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity and the tracks it made as it scooted along the rim of the crater from late 2006 to late 2007. For its beauty and its significance I've ordered a large print of this photo and will frame it for display on the wall of my office. (Note: This is a reduced-resolution image; Opportunity and its tracks won't be visible here. For a high-res image and the full story, visit this page at NASA.

Tasha's Winter View
Tasha’s Winter View

Yeah, I took vacation days this week. Some may feel time off was wasted on the kind of weather we received overnight and most of the day today… heavy snowfall. Not me. I was perfectly happy to sit in my warm home office working on my publishing project and not needing to drive anywhere. I don't know just how much snow we received –it hasn't fully stopped yet– but it was a lot… possibly a foot. She Who Must Be Obeyed stayed home from work and we took turns venturing into the weather to dig out our sidewalk and drive, perhaps not keeping up with the storm so much as keeping it from totally burying us. Around 3:00, after finishing my turn, I shot a few photos. These aren't beauty shots, but help illustrate that we have not much space into which to push or pile additional snow… it hasn't melted this month!

Mozy it is!

Mozy Online Backup
Mozy Online Backup

It took a lot of research and consideration* but I finally made my choice: I'm using MozyHome as my personal off-site backup service. I paid in advance for a year of unlimited backup space, downloaded and installed their software, and began configuration. There was only one moment when things didn't look good… an error message appeared saying the service couldn't connect with Mozy's servers. Clicking on a link within the message box, however, took me to a Web page at Mozy that indicated it was probably a firewall issue on my PC. A quick edit to the XP firewall, the configuration connection was established, and I was in business. Using their "Advanced" configuration option, I selected a few important directories on my PC, clicked on the [Backup Now] button, and it began. Less than half an hour from purchase to first run. This morning I checked on my computer and a message box on the screen told me the backup had finished successfully. Before I headed off to work I selected several larger directories (mostly photographs) and began another backup. So far I'm liking what I'm seeing and it will be reassuring to have the service in place when, next week, I begin my big annual publishing project.

*Agonizing, really, but that's what I do before making a committment.

As with at least one other "bad penny" that became famous during the past Presidential campaign, this one just won't go away and stay away. Someone has finally called him out publicly …
